Joanna Smetek holds an MA in law from Warsaw University where she also studied English Philology. Since 2012, she has been a lawyer at the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR). Her first engagements in HFHR entailed following human rights developments in the European Union, e.g. on the draft EU Data Protection Regulation, and developments in Eastern Partnership countries, especially violations of media freedom and freedom of expression in Azerbaijan. Currently, she is assistant project coordinator and helps manage HFHR’s cooperation with the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. On behalf of the Agency, HFHR conducts research into various human rights subjects, including information society, privacy and data protection, media freedom, rights of vulnerable groups or access to justice. She is also a member of the editorial board of the HFHR’s publication Human Rights Quarterly.
